Early termination fee calculator
Find what leaving HughesNet or Viasat costs this month, and how much waiting would save.
Answer first · current to
HughesNet charges up to $400 if you cancel before your term ends: the full amount in the first 90 days, then $15 less for each month of service ($30 a month on Lite). Viasat charges $15 for each month left in a 12- or 24-month term, and nothing on month-to-month service. Once your term is over, neither charges a termination fee.
If you cancel now
$250–$295
Early termination fee for hughesnet, 24-month plan after 10 months of service. HughesNet’s terms can be read two ways, so this is a range: ask for your exact figure when you call.
If you wait
| Cancel after | Fee | You save |
|---|---|---|
| 11 months | $235–$280 | $15 |
| 12 months | $220–$265 | $30 |
| 13 months | $205–$250 | $45 |
| 16 months | $160–$205 | $90 |
Waiting lowers the fee, but you keep paying for the old service and living with it. Only you can weigh that.
Don’t forget the equipment
Send back HughesNet’s leased modem and radio within 45 days of cancelling, or HughesNet charges $300 ($500 for Fusion, plus $50 per leased mesh node). The dish, mount and cables can stay.

How the HughesNet early termination fee works
HughesNet’s current fee page covers customers who subscribed on or after July 8, 2025. For earlier sign-ups: customers who signed up between Dec 19, 2023 and July 7, 2025 have a 24-month term on every plan, with the same $400 fee in the first 90 days falling $15 a month after that; earlier customers have their own terms on legal.hughesnet.com.
- First 90 days: the full $400 if you cancel in the first 90 days after activation.
- After that: the fee drops by $15 for each month of active service on 24-month plans, and by $30 on 12-month Lite plans.
- After your term: once the 12- or 24-month term ends, service renews month to month with no termination fee, but leased equipment must still go back within 45 days.
The fee is separate from the equipment. Leased HughesNet equipment must go back within 45 days of cancelling, or HughesNet charges $300 ($500 on Fusion). What goes back and how
How the Viasat termination fee works
$15 for each month left in your minimum term; no fee on month-to-month plans. For example, cancel 10 months into a 24-month term and the fee is $210 (14 months left × $15). Whether you have a term at all depends on where you live and the plan you chose: month to month, 12 months or 24 months, depending on the plans offered at your address.
Viasat equipment is leased too. You need to call Viasat within 7 days of cancelling to arrange the return, then send it back within 30 days. Cancel Viasat step by step
Ways to pay less, or nothing
Check your term end date first
If your term ends in a month or two, waiting may cost less than the fee. The calculator’s “If you wait” table shows how much each month saves.
Look for a price or terms change
HughesNet: if Hughes changes the agreement or raises prices, you can cancel within 30 days of the notice without the Service Termination Fee; the Unreturned Equipment Fee still applies. Viasat: if a change raises your monthly fee by more than 25%, you can cancel without the termination fee by calling within 30 days after the first bill that shows it. If you got a notice like that recently, mention it when you cancel.
Cancelled before installation?
HughesNet: cancel before installation and Hughes refunds what it collected when you ordered.
Ask, politely, once
Retention reps sometimes reduce fees or offer a cheaper plan to keep you. You don’t have to accept an offer, and you can simply repeat that you want to cancel on a date you choose.
Reality check
Wait before switching if…
- Your term ends within the next month or two and the fee is still large. A short wait can save most of it.
- The fee plus Starlink’s first-month costs would stretch your budget right now. Your current service, even if slow, is a working connection.
- You haven’t checked your sky view yet. Run the obstruction scan in the Starlink app at the spot you’d mount the dish before you pay any fee.
What switchers ask
How much is the HughesNet early termination fee?
Up to $400: the full amount in the first 90 days after activation, then $15 less for each month of service on 24-month plans ($30 on Lite). After the term ends there is no fee.
Does HughesNet waive the early termination fee?
Its terms waive it in specific cases, such as cancelling within 30 days after HughesNet changes your price or agreement. Otherwise it’s up to HughesNet; asking costs nothing.
Does Viasat charge a fee if I cancel?
Only if you have a minimum term: $15 for each month left. Month-to-month Viasat service has no termination fee, but the leased equipment still has to go back.
Is it cheaper to wait until my contract ends?
In money, usually yes: the fee shrinks every month. Whether it’s worth more months on the old service is your call; the calculator shows the saving for each month you wait.
Do I have to pay the fee if HughesNet goes out of business?
Hughes says its Chapter 11 case doesn’t change service or billing, and nothing official waives the fee. Latest on the case
