Here’s how to cancel Viasat: call customer care at 1-855-463-9333 or send written notice. You can cancel by phone or in writing; Viasat doesn't accept cancellation by email or chat. Unleashed and Unleashed Max have no termination fee; on a plan with a term, such as Essentials, the fee is $15 for each month left in your minimum term. After service ends, call Viasat within 7 days to arrange the return, and get the modem and transceiver to Viasat within 30 days, or the charges can reach $500.

Before you call Viasat

  1. Make sure your next connection works

If you’re switching, keep Viasat until the new service is installed and has held up on several busy evenings. Cancelling first can leave you offline for days if a delivery slips or a mounting spot turns out to be blocked.

  2. Move your phone number first, if you have Viasat Voice

Viasat sells Voice, a home phone add-on, for $35 a month plus taxes and 911 fees, and it runs over the Viasat connection. Sign up with a new phone company (mobile or VoIP) and ask it to move your number. The FCC says to keep your old phone service until the new company has started moving your number. Wait for a test call to ring on the new service before you cancel. Keeping your number

  3. Find out whether you owe a termination fee

Essentials has a minimum term of 24 months; Unleashed and Unleashed Max have none. Viasat’s own example of the fee: cancel 10 months into a 24-month term and the fee is $210 (14 months left × $15). Count your months from the service start date on your bill, or use the fee calculator. If only a month or two is left, waiting may cost less.

  4. Check for a recent price rise

If a change raises your monthly fee by more than 25%, you can cancel without the termination fee by calling within 30 days after the first bill that shows it. If your bill went up recently, have that bill in front of you when you call and ask whether the rise qualifies.

  5. Pick your cancel date

You pay the full month you cancel in; no partial-month refund. Choose a date near the end of your billing month, and make sure it falls after your new service and your phone number are working.

  6. Have these ready

    • your account number and the name on the account
    • the service address
    • a list of the Viasat equipment at your home (the modem, the power adapter, and the transceiver on the dish)
    • paper and a pen for the call log

On the call: what to say and what to ask

Call 1-855-463-9333. Say what you want in the first sentence: “I want to cancel my Viasat internet service, effective [your date].”

The rep will probably try to keep you: a lower price, a different plan, an upgrade. Some callers get passed to a second person who tries again. You don’t have to give a reason or argue. “Thanks, but I’ve decided. Please cancel it effective [date]” is enough, as many times as needed.

Before you hang up, ask these five questions and write down the answers:

  1. What is my termination fee, if any, and when will it be charged?
  2. Exactly which equipment do I send back? Do you need the dish, the mount and the cables, or only the modem, the transceiver and the power adapter?
  3. Will you send a return box or a prepaid label, and when?
  4. When will my final bill come, and what will be on it?
  5. What is my cancellation confirmation number?

Prefer writing? It counts too, but a phone call is faster and gets you a confirmation number on the spot. If you write, use a delivery method that gives you proof and keep a copy.

After the call: send the equipment back

Two clocks start when your service ends. Call Viasat within 7 days after service ends to arrange the return; the modem and transceiver must reach Viasat within 30 days or unreturned-equipment fees apply. Viasat either sends return instructions or, at its option, a prepaid shipping package.

  1. Call within 7 days after service ends to set up the return, even if you already asked on the cancel call.
  2. Take the transceiver off the dish safely. It’s outside, at the front of the dish arm. If you can’t reach it without risk, ask Viasat about a technician visit and its price.
  3. Photograph every part before it goes in the box, with the label and serial number readable. Then photograph the packed box and the sealed box with the label on.
  4. Ship it early, get a drop-off receipt, and keep the tracking number. The deadline is about when it reaches Viasat, not when you mail it.

Viasat’s return deadline counts to the day the parts arrive. Your photos and tracking record are what make a later “missing part” charge easy to overturn.

If Viasat says a part is missing

It happens: the box went back, and a bill still arrives for one part. Here’s what to do, in order.

  1. Find out exactly what was charged

Which part, what amount, and on which bill. Compare it with the fee list above.

  2. Send your proof

Call Viasat and send the photos showing that part’s serial number, the tracking record showing delivery, and your drop-off receipt. Ask Viasat to check its receiving record against those serial numbers.

  3. Point to your call log for the dish or mount

If the charge is for the dish, the mount or cables and you were told they could stay, give the rep’s name and the date from your log. Viasat’s agreement charges only for the modem, the transceiver, the power adapter and the Stream hub.

  4. Get the reversal in writing

Ask for a ticket number or an email confirming the charge was removed, and check that the next bill shows it.

  5. Still stuck? Take it further

Dispute the charge with your card issuer or bank, with your photos and tracking attached. You can also file a complaint with the FCC’s consumer complaint center or your state attorney general’s consumer office.

Your final Viasat bill

You pay the full month you cancel in; no partial-month refund. The last bill can also carry the termination fee, if you were in a term, and charges for any part that didn’t arrive in time. Go through it line by line against your call log. Keep watching the card or bank account Viasat charges until a bill shows nothing owed.

What switchers ask

Can I cancel Viasat online or by chat?

No. You can cancel by phone or in writing; Viasat doesn't accept cancellation by email or chat. The customer care number is 1-855-463-9333.

Does Viasat charge a cancellation fee?

Only inside a minimum term: $15 for each month left. Unleashed and Unleashed Max are month to month and have no termination fee.

Do I have to return the Viasat dish?

Viasat’s own pages disagree: the agreement charges only for the modem, transceiver and power adapter (and a Stream hub), while the FAQ says the dish, mount and cables go back too. Ask on the cancel call and write down the answer.

What if the Viasat equipment never goes back?

Viasat charges for each missing part, up to $500 for current ViaSat-3 equipment: $100 for the WiFi Gateway 3 modem, $350 for the Tria 3 transceiver and $50 for the power adapter. The parts must reach Viasat within 30 days.

Will Viasat refund the rest of my month?

No. You pay the full month you cancel in; no partial-month refund. That’s why the end of a billing month is the best day to cancel.

Can I keep my Viasat Voice phone number?

Yes, if you move it before you cancel. Start the port with your new phone company. Per the FCC, once you've asked a new company for service, the old company can't refuse to port your number, even if you owe a balance or a termination fee. Step by step

Order and set up Starlink before you make the cancel call, and run it beside Viasat for a few busy evenings. In Ookla’s US medians for Q1 2026, Starlink’s lag was 39 ms against 750 ms for Viasat, and Starlink lists unlimited data on every Residential plan. The Viasat to Starlink guide has every step in order, and Starlink vs Viasat compares them row by row.

Reality check

Hold off on Starlink if…

  • The Starlink app shows trees or buildings in the way at every spot you could put the dish. Viasat only needs the southern sky; Starlink needs a wide view.
  • You’re a few months from the end of an Essentials term. Each month you wait takes $15 off the fee.
  • A wired option (cable or fiber) reaches your home now or is being built to it. It’s usually the steadier, cheaper choice.
