How to cancel HughesNet: call HughesNet at 1-866-347-3292. We found no way to cancel online; the agreement also allows cancelling in writing. Before you call, find out your fee for this month (up to $400, falling each month), move any HughesNet Voice number to a new phone company, and make sure your new internet works.
After the call, send the leased modem and radio back within 45 days or HughesNet charges $300 ($500 on Fusion). The dish, mount and cables can stay on your roof.

Before you call
Find your term end date and this month’s fee
10 minutesHughesNet plans run 24 months (Select, Elite and Fusion) or 12 months (Lite). Cancel early and HughesNet charges a Service Termination Fee: the full $400 if you cancel in the first 90 days after activation, then $15 less for each month of service ($30 a month on Lite).
Work out your fee with our calculator. HughesNet publishes no month-by-month table, so the calculator shows a range. If your term ends soon, waiting may cost less: once the 12- or 24-month term ends, service renews month to month with no termination fee, but leased equipment must still go back within 45 days.
Got a price-increase notice recently? If Hughes changes the agreement or raises prices, you can cancel within 30 days of the notice without the Service Termination Fee; the Unreturned Equipment Fee still applies. Mention the notice when you call, and don’t wait: another clause in the agreement gives you less time to object.
Port your HughesNet Voice number first
before the callSkip this if you don’t have HughesNet Voice. If you do, this step comes before everything else, because cancelling Hughesnet internet also cancels Hughesnet Voice, and both termination fees can apply.
- Sign up with a new phone service (a mobile carrier or a VoIP home phone service) and ask it to port (move) your number. To take a Hughesnet Voice number elsewhere, the new provider submits the port request.
- The FCC’s advice: keep your old phone service until the new company has started moving your number. Simple ports must be processed in one business day, but plan for a few days.
- Once you've asked a new company for service, the old company can't refuse to port your number, even if you owe a balance or a termination fee. Voice has its own fee of up to $240 if you leave early, and the phone adapter goes back too.
Have your new internet working
a few eveningsKeep HughesNet until your new service has worked well on a few busy evenings. A gap without internet costs more than a few days of paying for both. Switching to Starlink? Your first service charge lands on the earliest of three dates: activation day, the 7th day after delivery, or the 30th day after shipping when no delivery date is recorded (Starlink calls this the 'Payment Due Date'), so set it up soon after delivery. Plan your dates
The call: what to say
How to cancel: call the Hughes Billing Department; the agreement also allows cancelling by written notice. The number is 1-866-347-3292. Have your account number ready (it’s on your bill), and the date you want service to end.
“I’d like to cancel my HughesNet internet service as of [date]. Please tell me the exact termination fee, and send me the return kit for the equipment. Can you give me a confirmation number?”
Expect an offer to stay. Reps often try to keep you with a lower price or a different plan. If an offer fixes your problem, fine. If not, say “No thank you, I’d like to cancel as of [date]” and repeat it as often as needed. You don’t have to give a reason.
Write these down before you hang up:
- the date and time of the call, and the rep’s name;
- the confirmation or ticket number;
- the fee they quoted, and whether any part was waived;
- when the final bill will come, and how the return kit will reach you.
After the call: send back the equipment
- What goes back: the leased modem and its power supply and the satellite radio; Fusion customers also return the multipath device, its power supply and the wireless antenna, plus any leased mesh Wi-Fi nodes.
- What stays: the outdoor antenna (dish), its mount and the cables don't have to go back. You can leave them, take them down yourself, or pay for removal.
- Bought your equipment? No equipment has to go back if you bought it.
- How: Hughes sends de-install and return instructions, and the parts go back in a Hughes return box with a prepaid label inside. No box after a week or so? Call and ask for one; the clock keeps running.
- Deadline: within 45 days of your cancel date. After that HughesNet charges $300 ($100 for the modem and power supply, $200 for the radio), $500 on Fusion, plus $50 for each leased mesh Wi-Fi node.
Charged for a part you sent back? What to do about a “missing equipment” charge
Your final bill
About the early termination fee: the fee is charged to the card or bank account on file. If you had HughesNet Voice, its own fee can show up too. Compare the final bill with your notes:
- the termination fee matches what the rep quoted;
- no service charge for days after your cancel date;
- no equipment fee if your return was delivered on time (check tracking).
Wrong charge? Call with your confirmation number, the rep’s name and your tracking number, and ask for it to be removed. Ask for the outcome in writing.
Reality check
Hold off on cancelling if…
- Your term ends within a month or two. Waiting can cost less than the fee.
- Your new internet hasn’t been tested on a few busy evenings yet.
- You have HughesNet Voice and the number hasn’t finished moving to the new phone company.
- You’d be left with no internet at all. A slow connection beats none for school, work and emergencies.
If you’re switching to Starlink
Set Starlink up and test it before you make this call, so you’re never offline. Starlink has its own sky needs, so check your spot with the Starlink app before you order. The full order of steps, from the fee to the mount, is in our HughesNet-to-Starlink guide, and the numbers side by side are in Starlink vs HughesNet.
What switchers ask
Can I cancel HughesNet online?
We found no online cancel button. Call 1-866-347-3292; the agreement also allows cancelling by written notice.
What is the HughesNet cancellation phone number?
1-866-347-3292. That’s the number HughesNet’s agreement gives for cancelling; the number on HughesNet’s sales pages is for new orders.
Can I cancel HughesNet within 30 days or before it’s installed?
Before installation, yes: cancel before installation and Hughes refunds what it collected when you ordered. After installation, the termination fee applies from day one: the full $400 if you cancel in the first 90 days after activation.
Will HughesNet waive the early termination fee?
Its terms waive it in specific cases: if Hughes changes the agreement or raises prices, you can cancel within 30 days of the notice without the Service Termination Fee; the Unreturned Equipment Fee still applies. Otherwise it’s up to HughesNet; asking once costs nothing. The Chapter 11 case doesn’t waive it.
Do I have to take the HughesNet dish off my roof?
No: the outdoor antenna (dish), its mount and the cables don't have to go back.
What if I bought my HughesNet equipment?
No equipment has to go back if you bought it. The termination fee still applies if you leave before your term ends.
